Some people are more susceptible to hearing loss from high-level sounds than others, and we offer custom-fit hearing protection devices in a wide variety of styles and colors to suit every occasion. Like your fingerprints, your ears are unique, so only custom-made hearing protection can provide great fit, superior comfort and repeatable effectiveness.
Pure-Tone Air and Bone Conduction Testing
Much like the traditional test in elementary school, this test requires patients to push a button each time they hear a tone. At Comprehensive ENT, a full diagnostic test, not just a hearing screening, is completed in a sound-treated booth with calibrated instruments. The air and bone conduction testing reveals the exact thresholds, or levels of sound, the patient can and cannot hear across a variety of frequencies.
Middle Ear Analysis
Dr. Richardson analyzes the middle ear by conducting Tympanometry and Acoustic Reflex tests. Tympanometry reveals how the ear drum is moving and acoustic reflex tests how well the tiny ear bones and muscles of the middle ear are working. Middle ear analysis is important to rule out a hearing loss caused by disease or dysfunction of the middle ear, an oftentimes treatable condition that does not require hearing aids.
Otoacoustic Emissions (OAEs)
OAEs, or otoacoustic emissions, are echos within the ear that are generated from the inner ear, or the cochlea. OAEs can reveal the current state of the patient’s inner ear health. At Comprehensive ENT, OAEs are included in every hearing test and are used to help define the extent of hearing loss and possible treatment options.
Hearing loss can be categorized by which part of the auditory system is damaged. The three basic types of hearing loss are conductive, sensorineural, or mixed. People of all ages experience gradual hearing loss, often due to the natural aging process or long exposure to loud noise. This kind of hearing loss is typically sensorineural. Other causes of hearing loss include viruses or bacteria, heart conditions or stroke, head injuries, tumors, and certain medications.
Treatment of hearing loss depends on the cause. Using a team approach, our ENTs and Audiologist can evaluate your hearing loss to determine the cause and course of treatment.
Tinnitus (Ringing ears)
Whether you pronounce it “ti-NIGHT-tis” or “tin-i-tus” (FYI: both ways are correct), the facts about tinnitus are alarming. Tinnitus affects nearly 36 million Americans and can vary from a debilitating disease to barely noticeable. It can be perceived as a buzz, beep, or roar and is most often attributed to damage within the inner ear from hearing loss. Normal aging is generally accompanied by a certain amount of hearing nerve impairment and tinnitus. If you are younger, exposure to loud noise is probably the leading cause of tinnitus, and often damages hearing as well.
Treatment will differ for each individual case of tinnitus. Using a team approach, the ENTs and audiologist will investigate the cause of your tinnitus so that the best treatment can be determined. Dr. Leeman offers thorough medical evaluations and treatments for tinnitus, while Dr. Richardson is trained to offer special devices and hearing aids that can help people affected by tinnitus.
